India’s M3 money supply has climbed from around ₹210 trillion in 2023 to nearly ₹323 trillion today. That’s more than a 50% increase in the money pool over roughly three years.
Money supply doesn’t guarantee rising markets. But over time, expanding liquidity, credit, nominal GDP and corporate earnings create the foundation for wealth creation.
The chart becomes particularly relevant when we look at asset prices. Over long periods, increasing liquidity tends to create a favourable environment for:
Money supply ↑ → Credit & liquidity ↑ → Economic activity ↑ → Corporate revenues/profits ↑ → Financial assets can benefit
But the transmission is not immediate. Markets can remain sideways for extended periods even while the underlying economy and liquidity continue to expand.
This is particularly relevant to the current Indian equity-market environment: a sideways market does not necessarily mean that nothing is happening underneath.
One important caution
M3 growth is a supportive macro indicator, not a standalone buy signal for equities. Interest rates, credit growth, inflation, fiscal policy, valuations, earnings growth and global liquidity also matter.
The market may look sideways. The economy underneath it isn’t.
For long-term investors, patience during consolidation can be as valuable as participation during a rally.
Happy Investing!
