Household asset ownership in India: TVs lead, washing machines lag
The 2024 Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) shows a clear ownership hierarchy: TVs (~two-thirds of households) > refrigerators (~half) > washing machines (~one in five).
The trend: TV ownership grew from just 10% in the early 1990s to today’s levels, but growth is now slowing — signalling near-saturation. Refrigerators, ACs/coolers, and washing machines followed a different path, with adoption accelerating only from the early 2010s.
Takeaway: Asset ownership remains a useful proxy for household economic well-being, and India’s consumption story is still playing out unevenly across categories.
